Sexting – the new fad

Modern technologies brought along quite a few things on its ever evolving journey. Email, social media, video streaming, high definition televisions, smartphones, iPads, computers, etc. all these things are a part of our daily lives now. I’m sure we all remember the just how fascinating it was to send a text message and even more, receiving one.

We text all the time, texting became an important part of our lives. With the advent of collared phones capable of producing coloured images we soon got multimedia messages/picture messages. Sending a text message back in the day was quite a burden on the bills. However today with all the data plans, you get unlimited texting packages and you can seamlessly carry out an entire conversation through text messages.

Once you press send, there’s no going back

However, today’s high tech devices come with it an all new low. The new fad called sexting. That’s right a hybrid of the words sex and texting. For those of you who don’t know, sexting is the act of sending a proactive/ sexually explicit message or picture to someone electronically. You can send it through email or cell phones.

A lot of people sext (sex text) couples do it, celebrities do it and yes teenagers do it. What’s worse is that it’s actually most popular amongst teenagers. A lot of teenagers think sexting is fun and harmless and that sending a picture to their boyfriends/girlfriends is ok, because well they’re their boyfriends. That’s where they’re wrong. Everything has consequences and the consequence for sexting can be quite unpleasant especially when the victim is you.

See once you’ve pressed send , that photo/video/text is out of your control, there’s no going back, and once that explicit photo/video/text has been received, it’s the recipient decides who else gets to see it. To resend, save or delete is all up to them.

See, she’s not too happy

Imagine what would happen if those pictures were to get out, and find its way to somebody else. I know a lot of people think they can trust their boyfriends/girlfriends, but for how long? You think they’d care once you guys break up?

This leads me to my next point. These leaked texts can find their way anywhere to someone else phones, your parents, some stranger, and can even wind up on the internet. Immortalized in binary code forever. Would you want that? The embarrassment and humiliation one would have to face can be quite an impact. People can use these photos to get back at you, they can blackmail you, and even if it gets out by accident, your reputation is completely tarnished.

Well, what could be inside?

Sexting is irresponsible and unfortunately it has risen drastically over the last few years. Don’t you care about your respect, especially for girls; I know you think you can trust your boyfriends, but would you really want to risk your reputation like that? Would you be ready to face the consequences? It may seem like fun when nothing has happened, but if those images/texts were ever to get out, I’m sure it wouldn’t seem that way. You can have your lives destroyed.

Think twice about sending anything to anyone that could be used against you, or cause you embarrassment or humiliation.

So what do you think? Have you ever sexted? What are your thoughts on people who do?
