The Gallup Polls – Fake or Real?

Gallup PollWritten by:

Pakistan may not be one of the most technologically advanced countries, but it is surely the one with a vision. Sadly, that vision only reflects the side the government wants the people to see, and here is where the Gallup Polls come in.

Before I move ahead, let me tell you what Gallup Poll is. It is a division of Gallup that regularly conducts public opinion polls in more than 140 countries. The media takes Gallup Polls as reliable and cite them in articles that either lambasts the government or defend its conduct.

Whenever you see an article or a media report citing Gallup Poll, ask yourself one question – was I part of the research conducted to get this data? The answer will always be no because that’s exactly how these Polls are conducted in Pakistan. The people conducting polls might disagree but why isn’t a layman asked about his favourite politician when the poll for the favourite politician is conducted. Why have you or I – for that matter – have never been approached by these people who claim to represent the entire population of Pakistan? The Gallup Polls is as corrupt as all the other organizations in Pakistan, and one mustn’t adhere to their results as authentic.

Just recently, a poll was conducted by Gallup people regarding the favourite TV channels in Pakistan. My colleagues and I who have been part of this media for more than 5 years now weren’t approached – be it in Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad. In fact when the results came out, we were shocked by it as the least likeable channel was the most likeable as per Gallup people. May be they had asked only the layman this time, but then who knows!

For a country where more than 70 percent of people are illiterate, where voting is not done by choice but by force, where the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer, the use of Gallup Polls by the government is a pathetic way to distract the public. It is one of their many tools to make the public believe that all is well, when its not. If the people conduct a Poll against the Government, I am sure they will come out as unhappy and distrustful of the very people they elected. That’s the reality, which the Gallup people don’t seem to be aware of!
