Parents are always complaining about how their children are so distant from them but have they ever thought of why that may be so? Parents should be friends with their children so that they are able to share their thoughts, problems and concerns with them without any kind of hesitation. Most of the people may disagree with this and think that a parent can never be a friend because of the superior level of respect they deserve but then everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

The thing is the only way you can be close to your child is to be their friend rather than to act like a parent and scold them all the time because that way they wouldn’t want to share anything with you. If they are frightened of you because of the way you react negatively when they mess up why would they come and confess to you in the first place? But if you calmly and rationally explain to them that what they did was wrong and then tell them the harms of it they are more likely to listen and cooperate with you.

To expect someone to care about you is not practical when you can’t show them that you care about them. To love someone is different but to express your love for them is just as important and by not doing so the parents themselves cause distances in their relationship with their kids.

For instance ill narrate an incident. A few days ago a friend called me telling me that his parents had bought him a new car. While he was going to customize it according to his choice, he had a really bad accident which was not his fault at all. When he called to tell his dad about it the father flipped out over the phone yelling at him for ruining the car but did not once ask him if he was hurt or not.

Everyone held him responsible for the damage caused to the car disregarding the fact that it was not his fault and no one bothered to make sure that he was alright. He was very hurt and why shouldn’t he have been? Obviously he felt that his parents don’t care about him.

Incidences like these happen all the time. You can buy a new car but god forbids if something happened to your child how would you replace him/her?

When something goes wrong like your child has a car accident. The correct thing to do would be to first make sure your child is okay and then to ask him/her what actually happened before jumping to conclusions and screaming at them. Do you agree?
